HURRICANE IKE POST-DISASTER UPDATE

Unfortunately, we sustained a direct hit from Hurricane Ike, and there was tornadic activity where the shelter is located. However, all of the rescues are fine and everyone made it through without tragedy. Right now, we have over 40 dogs in rescue, many of whom are heartworm-positive and/or in poor shape. On top of that, many of our volunteers have suffered hurricane damage, most commonly fences that were blown down during the storm. As a result, we have been forced to board the overflow of incoming Boston Terriers, which has caused an additional financial burden on our rescue. We are accepting donations to assist us with our post-disaster increased needs. Donations can be made via paypal at email address: bostonrescue@aol.com Thank you for thinking of all of us here at Boston Terrier Rescue of Greater Houston. ________________________________________________________

Our 9th Annual Christmas Party

Saturday, December 13th, at 7:30 p.m.. Once again, Scott and Troy have so graciously offered to host our annual Christmas party and gift-giving for the elderly at their lovely townhome in Houston. We welcome all of our Boston Terrier family and rescue community to join us for fun, friendship and lots of joy as we give back to the community. Each guest is asked to bring a basket of Christmas goodies and gifts for the senior residents of a local, inner city nursing home. At the party, we will have approximately 85 to 100 large gift bags situated around the downstairs rooms, and we will fill those with lots of gifts for the senior citizens of Manda Ann Convalescent Home in Houston. Gift suggestions include powders, toiletries, large-print books, large-print crossword puzzles, knick-knacks, calendars, lotions, coloring books, sketch pads, brushes, combs, etc., etc. - anything a senior citizen may enjoy. Remember, we will be FILLING large gift bags for EACH resident of the nursing home, so multiple inexpensive items are most appreciated! For more information on the party, contact Karen at: btr@houstonbostonrescue.org

How to become a virtual foster parent/sponsor

Be a foster mom or dad for a rescued Boston Terrier! For as little as $20.00 per month (less than 70 cents a day!), you can become a foster parent to one of our Houston rescues. For each dog fostered, we ask only that you pledge a minimum of $20.00 per month to help with that particular rescue's medical expenses and care for as long as he/she is in rescue (average 2-4 months). Your name will be listed as the virtual foster parent for that pup! Pledges can be mailed to our address at the bottom of this page, or can be made through paypal.com (for account: bostonrescue@aol.com). Thank you for helping us to help the rescues!

Real foster homes are also desperately needed!!!

We take in such a high volume of Boston Terriers in Houston each year that there is not enough adequate housing for each dog. Please consider opening your home and your heart to one of these precious kiddoes while they await their forever homes. Thank you!

A Very Special Thank-You

We owe much gratitude to two local angels - Sharon and Bobbie - who have been major supporters of Boston Terrier Rescue for many years now. In addition to their continued financial support and payment of many major surgeries, Sharon and Bobbie also donated the $5,000.00 gift card that we auctioned; they have supplied the kennel with a brand new computer, printer and washer and dryer, and they are always there to help out whenever we have a special need. Thank you for your unending support. We love you both!

More Thank-You's

Texas Laurels Chapter of the National Charity League We also thank the helpful moms and daughters of the Texas Laurels Chapter of the National Charity League, who continue to support us with their generous donation of time and talent! Thank you, moms and daughters!!!

Boston Terrier Rescue of Greater Houston, Inc.
World's Premiere Rescue Kennel Exclusively for Boston Terriers!!!

Boston Terrier Rescue of Greater Houston, Inc. is proud to have the world's first rescue kennel devoted solely to the rescue of Boston Terriers! We have the only rescue facility dedicated specifically to housing Boston Terriers, and we need your help to keep our shelter running smoothly! Thanks to the generosity of our wonderful benefactors and the hard work of our local volunteers, the 12-run, indoor-outdoor, climate-controlled kennel became fully operational in late 2005. At any given time, we have between 18 and 35 rescues residing at the kennel, so we need continual help in the following ways: Donations of time, talent and "gifts" are always welcomed! We group-clean the kennels on Wednesday evenings and Sunday afternoons. Volunteers are always needed, and new faces are heartily welcomed!!! We also need donations of cleaning supplies (laundry detergent, bleach, mops, brooms, paper towels, disinfectants, antiseptics, hand cleaners, spray deodorizers, or gift cards from any low-price chain store or dollar store); donations of dog food, treats, harnesses and miscellaneous doggie supplies (or gift cards from Petco or Petsmart to purchase those items); donations of clean towels, sheets or other bedding; donations of your time and talent to help in cleaning the cages and runs, bathing the dogs and general upkeep of the kennels. We welcome monthly sponsors of kennels, and in so doing, you will be recognized as a sponsor on the kennel or cage of your choice. Thank you for helping us to fulfill a longtime dream! KENNEL CLEANING HOURS: Wednesday evenings between 5:30 and 7:00 p.m.; and Sunday afternoons between 1:30 and 3:30 p.m. If you would like to join us, please email us for directions or more information at: bostonrescue@aol.com

Who We Are

We are a 501(c)(3) non-profit group of volunteers who rescue and rehabilitate Boston Terriers, then place them into loving hands. Although we are located in the Houston-Woodlands area, we rescue Boston Terriers from around the state, including Austin, Beaumont, Dallas-Fort Worth, Lufkin and even Louisiana - wherever the need may be. Boston Terrier Rescue does not refuse any Boston Terrier, regardless of age or medical condition. Sadly, we have received some of them into our care too late to make a difference, and have lost them to their illness or disease. Those that we are able to save live their lives in a kind, loving home while awaiting their "final destination." All medical care is provided, including urgent care, all vaccinations, spay/neuter and flea and heartworm preventative. Due to the large volume of rescues that we handle, we desperately need more volunteers to donate time and talent to saving these precious kiddoes. We welcome all volunteers, and are in dire need of foster homes and application processors. We also welcome donations of food; clean towels, blankets and pillows; leashes and collars; shampoo; harnesses and any other doggie items! Thank you for supporting our efforts!

In Memory of...

Our websites are dedicated to the memory of the rescues who just did not have a chance. Each of them holds a special place in my heart.

George - a kind, gentle soul who left this earth the day after he was finally adopted.

Missy - a senior girl who did not make it after anesthesia.

Jackson - who made it through his heartworm treatment, only to succumb to a massive seizure in the end.

Oscar - a sweet boy who had heartworms clogged in his veins, and who did not survive surgery for this unusual condition known as vena caval syndrome.

Bacchus - who was too far gone to save when we got him, but who lived his final five days surrounded by love, peace, comfort and warmth.

Sawyer - came into rescue with a bad case of heartworms. Before even beginning treatment, precious little Sawyer passed away in his sleep. He was a precious boy who was so gentle and quiet.

Herman - another sweet, gentle, quiet boy who so stoically bore the pain of his heartworm treatment. Toward the end, Hermie had such difficulty breathing that he had to be placed into ICU at the vet's office. After two days and what appeared to be a turning point for little Hermie, he passed away just after being taken out for a potty break. I was there to see the distant stare in Hermie's eyes, just before he lost consciousness. Thank you to my wonderful vets, Dr. Wall and Dr. Bulovas, and all of the vet techs and staff who dropped everything to rush over to Herman and immediately begin resuscitation efforts. Sadly, his little heart just could not take anymore, and he passed away shortly thereafter.

Bucky - this little guy came into rescue shortly before Christmas, and would have turned 14 years old on January 31, 2003. Bucky was severly malnourished, had heart problems and appeared to have cognitive dysfunction. Bucky died in loving arms on Christmas Day.

Please remember our little lost souls in your prayers, and in their memory please take extra special care of your pets. Many of these precious little angels never had the care they so deserved in this life. For those who passed away after adoption, thank you to everyone who gave them loving homes and proper vet care for their remaining time here on earth.
